When grout turns black right after cleaning, it’s usually not because the grout permanently changed color overnight—it’s because something was revealed, reactivated, or left behind. Common culprits include moisture that darkens porous grout, mold or mildew that was loosened and then spread, and residue from certain cleaners that traps dirt and makes joints look darker than before.
Grout is porous, so heavy scrubbing, rinsing, or steam can saturate it. Wet grout often looks several shades darker until it fully dries. If the dark color fades after 24–48 hours with good ventilation, you’re likely seeing water absorption rather than permanent staining.
Cleaning can remove surface soap scum that was hiding discoloration underneath. In showers, black spots may be mildew or mold living on top of the grout—or deeper in tiny cracks where water sits.
