The propane use of an instant (tankless) hot water heater isn’t a fixed “gallons per day” number—it depends on the unit’s BTU input, how long hot water runs, the temperature rise you need, and how efficiently the heater burns fuel. In general, most residential propane tankless models fall roughly in the 150,000–200,000 BTU range at full fire, and propane contains about 91,500 BTU per gallon.
Use this quick formula: propane gallons ≈ (BTU input × run time in hours) ÷ 91,500. For example, a 180,000 BTU heater running continuously for 1 hour at full output uses about 1.97 gallons (180,000 ÷ 91,500). A 199,000 BTU unit uses about 2.17 gallons per hour at maximum firing rate.
Tankless heaters rarely run at full fire the entire time. If your household uses the equivalent of 20–40 minutes per day of “high-demand” hot water heating time, a 180,000 BTU model might land around 0.65–1.3 gallons of propane per day (very roughly), with higher usage in winter when incoming water is colder.
Big temperature rise (cold climates), multiple simultaneous showers, higher flow rates, and hotter setpoints push burn rates higher. Short hand-washes and low-flow draws typically reduce firing intensity. Choosing a heater sized to your needed GPM and temperature rise helps avoid overspending on fuel and frustration with performance.

A full 20 lb tank holds about 4.7 gallons of propane, so at 180,000 BTU (about 2.0 gallons/hour at full fire) it could be roughly 2–3 hours of continuous maximum heating, or longer with normal cycling.
